The leaves are changing here, and there’s snow in Buffalo.
That can mean but one thing: Flu season is nearly upon us.
City health officials are urging residents to make plans to be immunized.
Flu season usually begins in December and runs through the early spring, ending in April, according to the city’s Division of Public Health and Community Services.
“Flu is a virus that is passed between people through uncovered coughs and sneezes and by direct contact,” said Dr. Natacha Sochat, the division’s medical director.
Each year, about 36,000 people in the United States die as a result of flu and another 250,000 are hospitalized, according to Dr. Paul Etkind, the city’s epidemiologist.
“To prevent this, the division recommends going to your health-care provider to get your flu shot,” said Michael Tremblay, the city’s health officer. “The flu shot is quick and easy. You cannot get the flu by getting the shot.”
The best time to get a flu shot is from mid-October through early December, but it’s OK to get the shot anytime during the winter, he said.
